Announcing TypePad

Ben, Mena, and Anil announce TypePad:

TypePad is an upcoming hosted service providing powerful tools for creating full-featured weblogs. Built in response to the needs of webloggers, online diarists and writers, TypePad harnesses the power of Six Apart’s popular Movable Type personal publishing system into a turnkey service, suitable for beginners and experts alike.

Think of it with Blog*Spot, except with MT handling the content management bit. Drooooool….

Well they have not mentioned pricing. In the mean time I am quite happy with my Blog Friendly Host. Wil Wheaton and I use the same host.

Good for the Trotts. I saw them talk here in Chicago, and they work their butts off to make MovableType happen. 16 hour days of coding and support?

If it's priced right (maybe levels of pricing, beginner to advanced?) and user-friendly enough (some of the template and archiving code can have a bit of a learning curve), they could probably steal away some Blogspot/Blogger Pro folk.

I wonder if they're the people to be doing it. I remember when I helped run the Greymatter [yeah, remember it?] support community, and when Indigo opened up Greylogs, it seemed like a nice enough idea ... but being a software designer and being a good Web host are two different things entirely.

There's something to be said for all-in-one, and there's something to be said for specialization. [I'm not shooting the Trotts here; I don't know them well enough to answer my own question, and I don't know whether they'll be involving anyone else in this endeavor.]

And now that I read the link from The Guardian over in Jason's sidebar, I'll answer my proctologist's phone calls, thanks ...

This is great news for present and future bloggers everywhere.

If I worked at Pyra, I mean Google, I mean on Blogger, I'd be really worried right now.

I enjoy Movable Type immensely, but I love the software-on-somebody-else's-machine aspect of Blogger. Typepad sounds like a good idea.

Competition pushes innovation forward and I expect Blogger to come up with something pretty special before too long...

Matt

P.S. If you are reading this over at Blogger HQ... my wish list includes a blog searching tool, the ability to sort/categorise my postings and a simple way of adding a comment box. I would also like Blogger to allow me to add non-blog pages to my site via the Blogger interface...
