Bit of trivia about the Philippine Airlines logos on this page (near bottom): it was just red-blue tailfins with black outlines for decades through Ferdinand Marcos' dictatorship. After he was overthrown in the 1986 People Power revolution, the new government wanted to add something to the logo. They chose the rising sun because (1) they wanted to celebrate the Pnilippines' "dawning of a new day," and (2) yellow was the new President Cory Aquino's favorite color (had some reference to her martyr husband's favorite song, Tie A Yellow Ribbon).
