Fin de Siecle

posted by Jason Kottke Mar 29, 1999

I wrote a little something for Fin de Siecle as well. The idea is that 365 people write a diary entry for each one of the days in 1999 that will serve as a sort of end-of-the-millennium snapshot. Neat idea.

Dr. Strangelove, Lolita, Henry Fool

posted by Jason Kottke Mar 29, 1999

Dr. Strangelove is a nifty movie. I hadn't seen too many of Kubrick's films, so I decided I needed to see what I was missing. I wish they made movies like this nowadays. A movie doesn't have to have David Spade or Adam Sandler in it to be funny.

Lolitais another of Kubrick's films...I didn't like it too much. It wasn't that the whole pedophilia thing bothered me...the movie just wasn't that compelling or interesting.

I just couldn't get into Henry Fool. The movie began and then didn't take me anywhere for an hour and 45 minutes. At the end, they stuck in some incest, rape, murder, and a Nobel Prize. Too little, too late.

Futurama premiere

posted by Jason Kottke Mar 29, 1999

The first episode of Futurama was pretty good. Of course, it'll take a while for the new show to get established, but the writing is sharp and the animation is way better than that of the Simpsons.

Harnessing the "Whoosh" - Using Flash and DHTML for Good, Not Evil

Now playing on A List Apart: Harnessing the "Whoosh" - Using Flash and DHTML for Good, Not Evil by yours truly.

Simply Porn

posted by Jason Kottke Mar 29, 1999

A new episode of 0sil8: Simply Porn. It's a parody of 3Com's new ad campaign featuring a nude woman holding a Palm V organizer. The ads are tastefully done (sort of), mine are not.

Tough week

posted by Jason Kottke Mar 29, 1999

I had a tough week last week. Severe life-changing decisions came to the fore. But, I got though it more or less unscathed. More or less.

As a reward, I bought myself one of those new Palm V organizers. Mmm...thinny.

Pioneer Press writeup

posted by Jason Kottke Mar 24, 1999

And I got written up in the Pioneer Press again for the SXSW award.

Beaucoup Fish by Underworld

posted by Jason Kottke Mar 24, 1999

Underworld's newest, Beaucoup Fish, is pretty good and at least as groovy as their past stuff, if a little more mellow.

One-stop portal hop

posted by Jason Kottke Mar 24, 1999

CamWorld has become my one-stop portal hop. Almost everything I surf on a daily basis is linked from here.

The Outline of History

posted by Jason Kottke Mar 24, 1999

I'm just getting into The Outline of History by H.G. Wells. Written in 1919, it's basically a history of the world from its formation several billion years ago up to the end of World War One. It's a little out of date here and there, but it's such a treat to read history written by such an excellent author.

I dislike airline food. Not

posted by Jason Kottke Mar 22, 1999

I dislike airline food. Not because it tastes bad, but because they try to please everyone but end up pleasing very few. For instance, take a plain bran muffin. Most people, I would wager, wouldn't mind eating a plain bran muffin...especially if there's no alternative. Then, add walnuts. Some people don't like walnuts and won't eat it. Now add poppyseeds, raisins, apple chunks, and a blueberry spread. You're alienating a lot of people by throwing all the crap in there. By making the muffin more diverse, they are actually appealing to a smaller audience, not the larger one they had hoped for. Sure, the uber-muffin will probably be tastier to some, but more people will eat the plain muffin.

And let's face it, most airline travellers are not looking for fine cuisine to eat on the plane; they're just looking for something to tide them over until they can buy a $4 hot dog in the concourse at Raleigh-Durham. Either that or they are looking for something they can easily throw up when the ride gets bumpy.

The loneliness is killing me

posted by Jason Kottke Mar 19, 1999

Thanks to a little MTV viewing this weekend, I can't get that damn Britney Spears song out of my head. Maybe it's because the loneliness is killing me.

I'm anxious to see the results of my Amazon associates report this weekend to see if anyone actually buys the Britney Spears album from the above link. Come on, gang, you can do it!

And to round out the day's Britney Spears-centric entry, there's a song on the above album called "Email my Heart". Sad or funny? I'm not sure, but I wish there were a clip on the song I could listen to and possibly heckle.

Newsflash! Ariana hooked me up with lyrics to "Email my heart". Enjoy:

Forever
Its been hours seems like days
Since you went away
And all I do is check the screen
To see if you're okay
You don't answer when I phone
Guess you want to be left alone
So I'm sending you my heart, my soul
And this is what I'll say

Chorus:
I'm sorry
Oh so sorry
Can't you give me one more chance
To make it all up to you
E-mail my heart
And say our love will never die
And I, I know you're out there
And I know that you still care (I know you care)
E-mail me back and say our love will stay alive

Forever
E-mail my heart
I can see you in my mind
Coming on the light
And opening this letter
That I've sent a hundred times
Here's a picture of us two
I look so good on you
And can't you please forgive me
For the hurt I've put you through

Chorus (2x)

The Late Late Show with Craig Kilborn

posted by Jason Kottke Mar 17, 1999

The Late Late Show with Craig Kilborn debuts on March 30, right after Letterman. Will Daily Show fans flock to the old host, or did they just like the show and not the host?

Back from SXSW

posted by Jason Kottke Mar 17, 1999

SXSW kicked ass. It was great seeing old friends again, meeting online friends IRL, and meeting new people. I also got a mention on Wired News. Here are some photos and commentary from the weekend.

A year has passed

posted by Jason Kottke Mar 14, 1999

I've been doing this notes thing for a year now. I didn't think I had the discipline to keep it going for two months, much less a year.

Best personal site at SXSW

posted by Jason Kottke Mar 13, 1999

0sil8 won best personal site at SXSW. Thank god there were no speeches; they just handed me the award, turned me around to pose for the photogs, and off I went. I hope they post pictures of the winners...I had to have one of the goofiest-ever looks on my face.

Off to SXSW

posted by Jason Kottke Mar 12, 1999

I will be at SXSW for the next few days. If you're going to be there as well, look me up. Or just yell my name really loud. Hopefully I will be able to update this from there and let you know how things are going. Not that you care.

The new Zodiac

posted by Jason Kottke Mar 11, 1999

An interesting calendrical tidbit: the Zodiac that everyone is familiar with today is actually based upon the movement of the sun through the constellations of 2500 years ago. Today, due to shifts in the earth's rotation and orbit, the sun moves through 13 constellations, not just 12. Here's the updated version:

Pisces (March 13 - April 19)
Aries (April 20 - May 12)
Taurus (May 13 - June 20)
Gemini (June 21 - July 19)
Cancer (July 20 - August 11)
Leo (August 12 - September 17)
Virgo (Sepetember 18 - October 31)
Libra (November 1 - November 21)
Scorpius (November 22 - November30)
Ophiuchus (December 1 - December 18)
Sagittarius (December 19 - January 18)
Capricorn (January 19 - February 17)
Aquarius (February 18 - March 12)

This means I'm actually a Virgo instead of a Libra. Not that I care.

Stanley Kubrick, RIP

posted by Jason Kottke Mar 10, 1999

The passing of Stanley Kubrick has me thinking about the man, what he did, and how he did it. What if, instead of crushing creative people with rules, deadlines, budget constraints, and other crap like that, movie execs left them to their own devices. Kubrick was an extraordinary genius to be sure, but who knows how many other geniuses have been crushed by studio heads that think making thoughtless movies like Armageddon and ID4 is a good idea.

Just think how much better those movies would have been if Kubrick had directed them. They would have had soul, a pulse, things to think about and reflect on. The great special effects would still be there too...probably better implemented as well.

kottke.org redesign

posted by Jason Kottke Mar 08, 1999

Also, kottke.org is all new. New graphics. New content. New everything. You may have noticed that I moved notes from 0sil8 to kottke.org. They will live here from now on.

Stupid laws

posted by Jason Kottke Mar 08, 1999

In other news, this store got a ticket for not having 75% of its name in English. What's next? Are they going to fine Taco Bell? (source: Obscure Store)

Swish swish whee!

posted by Jason Kottke Mar 08, 1999

I saw the funniest thing on the way to work this morning. The car in front of me lost one of its windshield wipers...it just flew right off as the car was sitting at a stoplight. The driver got out, looking a little perturbed, yet amused, put the wiper back on, and got back in the car.

Private Art correction

posted by Jason Kottke Mar 05, 1999

This is the first ever correction in notes. Huzzah! Now, I'm not saying that the other information here is totally correct (it isn't), but this is the first time I've ever alerted you to a goof.

It's come to my attention that Private Art is indeed a personal site and not a commercial production of Environmedia as previously thought, despite what it says on the Web site. My apologies.

March 4th!

posted by Jason Kottke Mar 04, 1999

Thought for the day: March 4th is the only day that works as a command as well as a date: March 4th. March forth. (courtesy of Nichol McGrane)

Also, Nyqil causes me to have some really weird dreams. Wow.

Information of all kinds

posted by Jason Kottke Mar 03, 1999

I read two nifty articles today.

The first is a piece written by Leslie Harpold at Smug concerning the increased proliferation of information and our attempt to keep up with it.

The second is a Salon article on bombs in online mailing lists.

And have you seen that Jetta commercial? Groovy music and a slick car. This advertising speaks to me. I want one.

SXSW Interactive Web Competition finalist

posted by Jason Kottke Mar 02, 1999

0sil8 is a finalist in the SXSW Interactive Web Competition in the personal site catagory. I'm competing against two friends, a Flash-based Gabocorp ripoff, and a site which really isn't a personal site. Godspeed to Maura, Flaunt, and, if I may be so bold, to 0sil8.

Army of everyone

posted by Jason Kottke Mar 02, 1999

Someday, everyone will be an Amazon associate just so they can get 15% off of their purchases there. None of the associates will be making any money, and Amazon will just be giving everyone an extra 15% off on purchases. This is what my dad calls having an army of all generals and no privates.

Writer's block

posted by Jason Kottke Mar 01, 1999

I've got writer's block. A prof of mine in college told me that the best thing for writer's block was to write straight on through it.

Nuts to that. I'm already tired of looking at this screen today, and I'm certainly not going to bore you good people with any such attempt.

I fear it is already too late.

P.S. The new Fatboy Slim rocks.
